COVID Protocols Expectations
All of our at-camp COVID related protocols are being finalized and will be announced soon but in the meantime, we would like to address a few items, particularly ones that we have gotten recent questions about:
- IS THERE A QUARANTINE BEFORE CAMP?: In the 7 days prior to camp, all families will be expected to take steps to help us mitigate the risk of COVID coming into camp. These steps will include
- Minimize group activities with those outside of your household, wherever possible
- Mask and distance while indoors from those outside of your household, wherever possible
- Avoid indoor meetings and gatherings, wherever possible
- Families will be expected to complete an Attestation Form confirming these steps have been taken
Note: we recognize that some campers will still be in school and some parents still at work. Nonetheless, the basic precautions as outlined, will still be expected for this 7 day period, whenever possible.
- TESTING:
- There will be a mandatory PCR test about 24 hours prior to the start of camp at a facility in Toronto. Details to follow.
- In addition, to avoid disappointment from an unexpected asymptomatic positive, or a positive from a prior case of COVID coming up in the mandatory test, it is being strongly recommended that each camper/ staff take a private PCR test about 2 weeks before camp. This will allow you to document any COVID in the camper’s system, whether it be current or within recent weeks and still come to camp. In the absence of this positive result, if the camper tests positive on the mandatory test (24 hours prior to departure), they will not be allowed to travel to camp on the planned departure date.
- MASKING @ CAMP: Campers and staff can expect masking to be minimal at camp on a day to day basis. The exception will be if symptoms develop, at which point our internal COVID management protocols would be enacted (details to come)
- VISITORS DAY: There will be no Visitors Day this summer. We will communicate at a later date our late-July video chat and/or phone call plans for campers and families, which will be made available for Period Plus and Full Summer campers.
Stay tuned for many more updates and exciting news to come as we get closer to camp!

COVID Surcharge
We are pleased to share that we are in a position to reduce the surcharge from 2021 (which was $250) to a reduced COVID surcharge of $150 per camper and this will cover the cost of BOTH the mandatory and recommended PCR test at our designated lab in Toronto (full details coming next week), in addition to all other variable and fixed costs the camp continues to incur related to covid-19. Please note this is a subsidized amount and applies whether you do both PCR tests or not.
If this cost poses a challenge, we have a scholarship process to cover up to 100% of these fees. Please contact [email protected] for more info.
More Information on PCR Testing:
What kind of PCR testing does the lab offer?
The tests are not intrusive, and much more similar in style to a rapid antigen test. They are best described as a "nose picker", not a "brain tickler".
Why are we doing PCR testing?
With widespread vaccination and general population immunity from previous infection, plus generally milder virus variants, the COVID19 situation is improved in Ontario. Thankfully, life in Ontario has reached a more “normal” state, and for that we are all thrilled! That said, community spread remains very high, and to many individuals, this is not common knowledge. Mask mandate removal and the opening of indoor venues and activities means that exposure risk is high, and COVID19 remains one of the most contagious viruses ever documented. Further, while previous exposure and vaccination reduces likelihood of infection, it does not eliminate risk altogether. Re-infection with COVID19 may occur as little as 30 days after a previous infection.
In light of the above information, the success of camp in the summer of 2022 may be highly dependent on the efforts we take to mitigate against entry of the virus into camp, With that said, we do not expect to keep all cases out of camp, nor are we operating as we did last year as a ‘closed environment’ (i.e. there will be some outside groups, some possible trips, staff days off, shopping, etc.). It is reasonable to expect that there will be cases of Covid in camp, and possibly as camp progresses, in both campers and staff, despite the non-pharmaceutical interventions that will be put into place. Nonetheless, minimizing any identifiable cases from entering camp, is just common sense.
It is important to note that we are following recommendations that any individual with confirmed or highly suspected COVID19 should be sent home from camp. This potential outcome comes with both a financial cost to parents/guardians and social-emotional cost to campers/staff. Therefore, it is in all of our collective interest to take reasonable steps to minimize the entry of Covid-19 into camp through testing and protocols leading up to camp. The best way to do this, despite its limitations and challenges, is with PCR testing.
More information on COVID management, and the process for the PCR testing, will continue to be shared in our ongoing Road to Camp communications.
What if I have had COVID in the last 180 days?
A: Medical evidence has demonstrated that people can be re-infected with COVID within periods as short as 30 days. Therefore, a test done 2 weeks prior to camp, is the best way to ensure the most favourable two possible outcomes:
1) A negative test result (and then you'll take the mandatory test as well the day before departure)
2) A positive test result, which will allow you to follow appropriate protocol and then come to camp without the need for a second PCR test, so long as the camper is asymptomatic on the day of departure.
Stay tuned for many more updates and exciting news to come as we get closer to camp!

June 10- Spring Mailing, Forms Reminder and more
Thank you for all of your support and feedback as we continue to navigate protocols around summer 2022. We know these emails can be 'heavy' at times, and we appreciate your attention to these important communications.
As many of you know, camps have not received guidance related to Covid-19 from Public Health or any other governing or regulatory body for this summer. As a result, every camp will have different protocols and expectations this summer. We are pleased to report that our current plan was reviewed with Ontario Public Health and they are very supportive of the plan as presented. We are grateful for the expert advice we are receiving from our medical advisory committee.
Remember to continue to check our Summer 2022 page for ongoing updates as these updates continue to form part of the participant agreement for summer 2022
Spring Package Update ‘Spring Mailing’
All families that are current (paid in full) can expect to receive your spring mailing in the coming days. This package will include:
Forms and Reminders
2) Swim Form
3) Camper Profile Photo
4) Camper Questionnaire
5) Summer 2022 Release, Indemnity, and Acknowledgment
6) COVID Vaccine Certificate Upload
6) CIT ONLY: CIT Criminal Check Verification
In response to your feedback (thank you), we wanted to clarify a few points:
What happens if there is a positive test result in the 14 days before camp?
If the test was done at In-Common Labs, we will know, and make sure you are informed as well. If the test was done independently, you will need to inform us in writing and send the proof of positive results to [email protected]. After following public health protocols, so long as the camper/staff is symptom free leading up to and including date of departure, you will be going to camp as planned!
How will we find out the test results from In-Common Labs?
In-Common Labs will report positive cases to public health and the family will be advised as well by the lab and/or camp. Negative test results will not be communicated by the camp or lab unless the camp receives a specific request in writing to do so. The mantra here is ‘no news is good news’.
Can we do our test at a different lab?
Summer 2022 has been planned with In-Common Labs as our testing facility for all of our families in southern Ontario. This is the same lab that proved to be incredibly supportive, efficient, and available to our families for 2021. While Camp Northland does not benefit in any way from this affiliation, for efficiency and organizational purposes, all tests for camp purposes are required to go through In-Common Labs except for extenuating circumstances as reviewed and approved by the Camp Director in writing and in advance. The summer 2022 Covid surcharge of $150.00 includes any costs related to both the recommended and required test at IC Labs only (in addition to all other costs incurred related to Covid-19 in preparing camp for summer 2022).
Where do I find the most accurate and up-to-date Attestation?
The most current information is all found on our website. Links from earlier emails could direct you to old pages. Please stay connected and updated through the website Summer 2022 page, and refresh the page when you enter.

STAFF:
May 20th - Busing is a go(!), testing expectations, Graduation info and more
Covered in this email:
As we are now just 44 days away from the first day of camp, we are sending our ‘Road to Camp’ email series for 2022. Road to Camp emails will help navigate and guide you as you prepare for Summer 2022!
Transportation to camp:
We are excited to announce that this year we will be bussing all of our staff to camp on June 23rd (international staff) and June 24th (local staff)! All details, including about baggage drop off, will be coming very soon!
Please note that as a safety precaution, we will be asking that all staff come to the buses with a disposable mask to wear on the ride to camp. If any other masking is required throughout their time at camp, they will be provided by the camp. i.e. No additional masks need to be brought to camp
Medications:
If you are a staff that takes daily medications at camp, watch for an email next week with details about a revised process for 2022. There will be an important form to fill out when you receive that email so please make sure to do so in a timely manner.
COVID Protocols Expectations
All of our at-camp COVID related protocols are being finalized and will be announced soon but in the meantime, we would like to address a few items, particularly ones that we have gotten recent questions about:
Graduations
This section is specifically for all of our local staff who have in-person graduations this June.
While details of our COVID related protocols are still being finalized, we know many of you are awaiting word on leaving precamp for graduation. It is likely that we will be minimizing in and outs as it creates added risk to camp, however if it is important for you to attend your graduation and/or if there is no zoom type option (which we would support), you can go, but please note this will impact your specific COVID protocols for a period of time following your return to camp. Please also understand a couple key points:
1. There will be an expectation of following strict guidance when off-site, including N-95 masks, distancing and likely some additional testing
2. There will be some additional protocols upon returning to camp, that will be explained in the next couple weeks, but will likely last for 7-10 days after your return.
Even if you plan to attend your graduation, the expectation of being onsite at pre-camp as of Friday June 24th will not change. If you plan to attend your graduation, you will be permitted to leave and return and we will be in touch specifically with the 04's to discuss the details and dates and logistics with you soon. You would need to arrange your own transportation.
Stay tuned for many more updates and exciting news to come as we get closer to camp!

All of our at-camp COVID related protocols are being finalized and will be announced soon but in the meantime, we would like to address a few items, particularly ones that we have gotten recent questions about:
- IS THERE A QUARANTINE BEFORE CAMP?: In the 7 days prior to camp, all staff will be expected to take steps to help us mitigate the risk of COVID coming into camp. These steps will include
- Minimize group activities with those outside of your household, wherever possible
- Mask and distance while indoors from those outside of your household, wherever possible
- Avoid indoor meetings and gatherings, wherever possible
- Staff will be expected to complete an Attestation Form confirming these steps have been taken
Note: we recognize that some staff will still be in school/work/travel. Nonetheless, the basic precautions as outlined, will still be expected for this 7 day period, whenever possible.
- TESTING:
- There will be a mandatory PCR test about 24 hours prior to the start day at a facility in Toronto. Details to follow
- International staff- you should arrange for this before you travel to Canada
- In addition, to avoid disappointment from an unexpected asymptomatic positive, or a positive from a prior case of COVID coming up in the mandatory test, it is being strongly recommended that each camper/ staff take a private PCR test about 2 weeks before camp. This will allow you to document any COVID in the camper’s system, whether it be current or within recent weeks and still come to camp. In the absence of this positive result, if the staff tests positive on the mandatory test (24 hours prior to departure), they will not be allowed to travel to camp on the planned departure date.
- There will be a mandatory PCR test about 24 hours prior to the start day at a facility in Toronto. Details to follow

June 2 - Proof of Vaccination, the days leading up to camp – expectations, High School Graduation Ceremonies – how does this work? PCR Testing Requirements and Days and Nights Off
This is now getting really exciting! We are now just 31 days away from the first day of camp! This is our next ‘Road to Camp’ staff email for summer 2022. As you may already know, our Road to Camp emails will help navigate and guide you as you prepare for Summer 2022! This is a supplement to the Road to camp email sent to parents on May 29, 2022 which has some additional general information which we recommend you read by clicking here.
In the body of this email we wanted to address some issues that are only relevant to you – our highly treasured staff:
Vaccine Certificates
ALL CAMPERS AND STAFF MUST BE VACCINATED.
In addition to confirming vaccine doses on the camper's Health History Form, you must also upload an official copy of the vaccine confirmation on your CampInTouch account.
As a reminder, our vaccine policy can be found here.
Please make sure you are up to date on all of your forms at this time.
Pre-summer expectations
In the 7 days leading up to camp, (regardless of previous infection) it will be expected that all staff follow basic non-pharmaceutical intervention protocols to minimize the likelihood of exposure to COVID-19. At the most basic level, these include:
There is one known exception to the above expectations – attending your high school graduation ceremony (if applicable).
Graduations – the rules that must be followed
We are making an exception to leave precamp for your important and meaningful graduation ceremony. This is not a license to attend parties which could seriously jeopardize camp for you and others.
Staff attending their graduation ceremonies are expected to:
PCR Tests- FREE for local staff
We are pleased to share that camp will be paying for any testing requirements for local staff that use our dedicated facility located in Toronto, including the recommended test 2 weeks before, and the mandatory one 24 hours before. We will be in touch with the process shortly.
International staff are reminded that we recommend a PCR test be taken 2 weeks prior to your travel date (so if positive, you can isolate and still come to camp on schedule) and that you MUST take a PCR test approximately 24-48 hours prior to travel as we need a negative result to admit you into camp.
More Information on PCR Testing can be found by clicking here.
Days and Nights Off
In 2021 local public health guided that staff could not leave camp if we wanted to be able to operate with any sense of normalcy as the summer progressed. For those of you that were there, you know we invested in a new location for a staff lounge, added an outdoor event tent, BBQs, TV, movies, video game consoles, systems for ordering food, wi-fi [when locally available], games, etc. We are committed to continuing to invest in the ’Staff Oasis’ as we move forward. Public Health has been silent on these guidelines since March. We have upcoming meetings with our local public health unit to determine what we can and cannot do, as well as what is recommended by them and our medical advisory team. If staff will be able to leave camp, it will certainly come with restrictions, rules, and a social contract that all staff will have to sign. Whatever is decided is to best protect your summer and the camper summer and we thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these challenging questions. We value your experience as much as the camper experience and our choices always consider your best interests as well.

In the 7 days leading up to camp, (regardless of previous infection) it will be expected that all staff follow basic non-pharmaceutical intervention protocols to minimize the likelihood of exposure to COVID-19. At the most basic level, these include:
- Avoiding indoor and large-scale events (i.e. dance recitals, birthday parties, weddings, play dates, indoor dining, etc.)
- All household members are encouraged to minimize interaction with those outside their home (interactions should be outdoors or masked indoors if necessary)
- Wearing a 3-ply, tight fitting surgical quality mask (or preferably N95) indoors outside of immediate family/household (including school)
There is one known exception to the above expectations – attending your high school graduation ceremony (if applicable).

We are making an exception to leave precamp for your important and meaningful graduation ceremony. This is not a license to attend parties which could seriously jeopardize camp for you and others.
Staff attending their graduation ceremonies are expected to:
- Wear a 3-ply, tight fitting surgical quality mask (or preferably N95) to the ceremony
- Avoid unnecessary large groups and close contact with others beyond what is necessary for the graduation ceremony
- Minimize indoors time as much as possible
- Be away from camp for as little time as possible
- You will sign a social contract confirming our understanding of expectations
- You and those travelling with you will mask in any car rides, including travel to and from camp for this purpose.
- Upon return to camp, you will be required to mask indoors for a period of 5 days when with other people, except to sleep
- Upon return, you will eat outside for 5 days (we have a great event tent for this)
- You will be tested for COVID at camp 3, 5 and 7 days after your return to camp (at our cost)
- Any other requirements as may be determined by our medical advisory committee
