Learn the Camp Northland Terminology
All Days
On Shabbat our regular specialties are not running. Instead, staff organize a special all-day program which follow different themes. Most All Days are divided by Units and Sections, but sometimes there is camp-wide All Days, like Maccabiah.
Buddies up!
If you do go swimming at General Swim, you need to go swimming with a buddy. Buddies need to sign in and they get a number. When the whistles are blown, Swim Staff will yell “Buddies Up!” which means stop swimming and find your buddy. Each set of buddies will then need to yell out their numbers in order to make sure everyone is safely swimming and no one is missing. When you are finished swimming, you need to sign out, so they can cross off your number.
Buffet Train
Every Saturday morning there is a sleep-in for Shabbat. All morning there is a buffet breakfast open to drop in. The buffet train is a schedule where staff from each Section or Unit pick up campers from every cabin to go down to the Mess Hall for breakfast.
Cookout
Once a week, each Unit or Section will walk to one of the many cookout spots on Moose Lake. At cookouts, campers can hang with friends, read, play cards or go swimming. A bonfire is made and hotdogs are made for dinner. Once dinner is over, everyone will walk back to main camp in time for EP.
EP
“EP” stands for Evening Program. Each day, different staff members will organize a different program for after dinner. This could be anywhere from a talent show, a bonfire, capture the flag or a Social.
Flagpole
Every day between when Junior Shift dinner ends and Senior Shift dinner begins, the entire camp gathers at our Flagpole which is located in front of the Mess Hall. Flagpole is where important camp-wide announcements are made, where there are different segments, such as news or jokes, and evening programs are announced. Flagpole is also where we hold our Havdallah services.
Free Friday
Every Friday afternoon, all activities are open and campers are free to choose which one they would like to do. Some activities require signing up beforehand, and some specialties run special Free Friday programs, like Tie-Dye, challah making and sending Shabbat-O-Grams.
General Swim
Every day campers are given a general swim period where they are free to swim or hang out on the beach.
Hobbies
In addition to scheduled cabin activities, campers are given some choice in their daily schedule. A hobby period is where campers can sign up for their favourite activity and enjoy building their skill or specialized programs 3-4 times a week at that activity. Each week, campers will pick a new hobby for that week.
Junior Shift
Our camp is divided into two shifts. Junior Shift is Unit 1, Unit 2, Section I and Section II and operate on an earlier schedule.
Mess Hall
The dining hall where we gather to eat our meals, sometimes in two shifts.
Moose Lake
The lake at camp is called Moose Lake.
Overnight
Once during each session, each Unit or Section will canoe to one of our overnight spots on Moose Lake. Overnight spots are like cookout spots, but farther and bigger. Instead of coming back after dinner like on cookouts, each Unit or Section will spend the night at the overnight spot. It’s kind of like an extended cookout.
Rec Hall
Rec Hall is shortened for recreation hall. Each Unit or Section has a Rec Hall where campers can hang out or evening programs can be held.
Round-up
Every morning each Unit and Section gathers before breakfast and before lunch by their rec hall to hear their schedules for each day. Round-up also is a time for any important Unit or Section announcements or instructions.
Section
All the boys in camp are divided into four sections according to age: Section I, Section II, Section III and LTP Boys
Senior Shift
Unit 3, Section III and LTP Boys and Girls. They operate on a later schedule.
Shabbat-O-Grams
During Free Friday, campers and staff are able to send special notes to their friends or families in other Units, Sections or shifts.
Social
Before/after Havdallah, there is a Social on Saturday nights. Socials are dances divided by Junior Shift and Senior Shift.
Special Laundry
Sometimes accidents happen! That’s okay because we have special laundry for those times that cannot wait until our regularly scheduled laundry. If something happens, make sure one of the staff members in your Unit or Section is notified and they will help you organize special laundry.
Tuck
Two times a week, campers are able to get a treat and drink in exchange for a letter written home. The options for Tuck alternate each time.
Unit
All the girls in camp are divided into four units according to age: Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, LTP Girls
