HALIBURTON, Ontario. – JCamp 180, a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF), recognized Camp Northland with the Outstanding Board Leadership Award at its annual conference.
The JCamp 180 Outstanding Board Leadership award is given in recognition of a camp board or committee whose leadership has produced significant improvement in governance, fundraising, and strategic planning.
Just seven years ago, Camp Northland was struggling on several fronts. The board stepped up, spearheading a very successful professional leadership transition, mobilizing the community to invest in camp, enhancing its own governance structure, and adopting a culture of growth and learning. Collaborating with JCamp 180 and other partners like the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, Northland has enjoyed a remarkable period of stability and growth.
After an unprecedented summer in 2020 that left many camps across the country closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Northland campers experienced a rich and rewarding summer. Given the enormous additional demands, this past summer would not have been possible without the mobilization of the Northland board, and its resolve and commitment over several years.
“It has been a true privilege to work with a volunteer Board that has tireless energy, unrelenting dedication to our camp and community, and a hunger to learn and grow,” says Simon Wolle, Director of Camp Northland. “When the pandemic hit, and the government closed our camp in 2020, the Board stepped forward to seek solutions, explore opportunities, and put the children, youth, and families that our camp served as a top priority. With the Board's support and direction, we were able to open safely and successfully for an incredible summer of 2021. Our collaborative journey has continued and we are already sold out for summer 2022! We are all appreciative and in awe of the Board's ongoing contribution to our collective success.”
The JCamp 180 Outstanding Board Leadership Award is given each year to a camp board that has shown strong guidance and overall vision for the organization, exceptional support to its executive director and staff, successful fundraising performance, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. In these extraordinary times, the Northland board met and exceeded these benchmarks, contributing to a successful and safe summer, and setting the organization back on the path of long-term growth and financial stability.
Sarah Eisinger, director of JCamp 180 said: “JCamp 180 is honored to award the 2021 Board Leadership award to Camp Northland, an independent camp, and an enormous asset to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Jewish community for nearly a century. The Northland board is being recognized for its successful leadership transitions, a strong vision and commitment to strategic planning, and a culture of collaboration and learning. This past summer was one of the most challenging, and yet Northland offered GTA families an amazing summer experience. This would not have been possible without the mobilization of the entire board, and its steadfast leadership over several years. Northland’s future is very bright.”
