Camper and Parent Code of Conduct

AS A CAMPER I WILL…
  • Recognize I am a part of the Camp Northland community. I will respect the environment, peers, staff and Jewish practices and customs that are part of the program.
  • Treat people the way I would like to be treated. I will be inclusive and kind to others.
  • Cooperate with camp staff and follow their instructions. This includes rules and regulations put forth by general and specialty counselling staff.
  • Help keep my cabin and the surrounding environment clean and put all litter in the trash cans.
  • Have good hygiene by having regular showers, brushing my teeth and changing my bedding and clothes regularly.
  • Stay with my counselors, unless I have special permission not to be with them.
  • Talk to someone if I feel unsafe.
  • Have lots of FUN, a positive attitude, and always try to have a GREAT time.
  • Recognize the importance of ‘relational responsibility’ and ensure to always positively and intentionally manage my relational responsibility in a way that helps and supports creating a positive experience for those around me. I will therefore be aware of and manage my attitude, body language, tones, expression, etc in a way that makes others feel welcomed rather than excluded, and makes others feel positively encouraged rather than being negatively impacted.

AS A CAMPER I WILL NOT…
  • Be mean, bully, exclude or put down other campers or staff on or off camp property. I will NEVER hit, threaten, intimidate, inappropriately touch, or even gently touch another camper that has not provided explicit consent for me to do so.
  • Violate the camp’s zero tolerance policy around drugs (including marijuana), alcohol, smoking, vaping or any prohibited act or substance as defined by both law and camp regulations.
  • Deliberately hurt anybody’s feelings. Including pulling pranks on others which could cause someone to feel offended or unsafe or that might result in retaliatory action which could lead to injury or property damage.
  • Use foul, inappropriate, or abusive language (this includes language of a sexually explicit nature).
  • Behave in a way at camp, in the city, at school, through social media or otherwise, that is abusive, harassing, inappropriate or that goes against the spirit of this Agreement with respect to other campers, staff, or members of our community.

I understand that if I am having trouble following this code of conduct, the following could happen:
  • I may have a meeting with my counsellor, section director or one of the camp Assistant Directors or the Camp Director.
  • A staff member might call my parents to discuss my behaviour.
  • I may be given, or be asked to carry out, a suitable consequence to be decided by camp staff. (Examples of consequences include but are not limited to: writing an apology letter, missing activities, losing privileges, having your own bunk (cabin) or bunk mates moved, being sent home from camp early at your parent/guardian(s) expense and responsibility, not being allowed to attend or return to camp etc.)
  • If my behavior is hurtful to myself, others or camp property, I will likely be sent home that same day or as soon as possible thereafter at the parent/guardian(s) full expense and responsibility.

Furthermore…
  • I explicitly understand that there is often no ‘hard evidence’ in matters relating to relational responsibility, bullying or similar areas of conduct. Nonetheless, I trust and accept the camp to make determinations on these matters and accept the judgment of the camp and any related consequences included, but not limited to, dismissal from camp.
  • There are no entitlements to refunds of any kind if a camper is sent home for behavioral reasons (all of the above).

As a parent and/or guardian, I am fully committed to this Code of Conduct and agree to its content. In addition, I will always treat the camp and the staff with respect regardless of circumstances or challenges that may arise. If I fail to meet this expectation, it will be deemed to reflect a failure to trust the camp and its staff. Therefore, I understand that my child(ren) may be sent home from camp and/or not be accepted back to camp as the case may be. I will also disclose any and all information as requested and implied in the medical form including medical, psychological and socio-emotional issues or concerns past or present. I also understand that comments or complaints are to be directed to the camp’s professional staff.

By applying to register, the camper(s) and family agree to abide by the Camper Code of Conduct.  If you have any questions about our Camper Code of Conduct, please contact the Camp Director at (905) 881-0018 or by email at simon@campnbb.com.

Supplemental Camp Policies related to On-line Programming (Updated September, 2020)
Parents and Children:
To provide a standard of measure on best practices, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, in partnership with the Ontario Camps Association, has developed guidelines to help establish professional boundaries for virtual camp programs. All parents and campers must adhere to these guidelines, as adapted by Camp Northland and provided herein.
Parents and children must also comply with all existing policies and the Camper and Parent Code of Conduct. This document is an additional supplement to the existing policies.

Parent and Camper Mandatory On-Line Conduct Guide (for any online programming):
Parents and campers will ensure that:
• Campers do not send friend requests to staff through social media accounts;
• All parties should be located in common/high traffic household areas (bedrooms/bathrooms are off limits).
* Proper clothing attire must always be worn.
* Only registered children participate in the facilitated on-line programs. If there is more than one child in the household that may participate, all must be registered with the camp. If a child appears that is not registered, the link to your household will be terminated and your account may be suspended pending further review and discussion.
* The camp reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate sessions, link or participation if any aspect of our expectations or policies is violated in fact or spirit.

By participating in this program, I understand that:
1) The Camper and Parent Code of Conduct is still in effect for online programming. All camp policies remain in effect as applicable, as may change from time to time. These policies can be found here: https://www.campnbb.com/camp-policies.html.

2) If a participant says/does something either explicitly or in the background that would violate the Code of Conduct in any way, the host will immediately disable that participant's video. If the issue is not resolved, or refuses to be resolved, the participant will be kicked out of the remainder of the session and the parents will be notified.

3) While Camp Northland is taking every measure to keep our online participants safe, they are participating at their own risk. A parent/guardian must be home since we are engaging the child. Although some of our programs are facilitated, it is the parent/guardian that has full supervisory responsibilities for the child or children participating.

4)a) Camp Northland is facilitating an activity, not acting as a supervisor for the child.
4)b) For unfacilitated shared programming ideas, the camp has no involvement, nor supervisory role or responsibility. Each family should also make its own determination as to appropriateness of the recommended programs for your children. Each child is different, and the camp cannot determine the appropriateness of a particular program for your child with recommended self-managed programming.

5) The participant will post and participate online both responsibly and positively.

6) The participant will be mindful of privacy settings and online safety.

7) Camp Northland will not tolerate bullying of any kind which includes cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. Bullying of any kind, including cyberbullying, may result in expulsion from any camp program, including virtual programs, with no refund provided, where applicable.

8) Camp Northland, it's agents, employees, and affiliates including third party program or content providers are in no way responsible for any loss, injury, illness and/or damage of any kind whatsoever arising from, or relating to, the delivery of the ideas and/or resources in any communications related to this program.

By participating in any of our programs, whether facilitated programming, or through ideas shared by email, social media or otherwise, you are agreeing that Camp Northland, its agents, staff, representatives and affiliates are in no way responsible for any loss, injury, illness and/or damage of any kind whatsoever arising from, or related to, the delivery of these program, ideas and/or resources. You may opt out of our email based program at any time by clicking opt out links where provided or emailing happycamper@campnbb.com with your preferences.

Allergies and diet requirements

Camp Northland cannot create or warrant an allergy free environment. We make all reasonable efforts to accommodate all known allergies but cannot guarantee that there will not be exposure to allergens or cross contamination. eg. Our kitchen uses gluten products like flour and therefore cannot actually be gluten free (it is in the air and on surfaces etc). Therefore, at a practical level, in this example, cross contamination is a guarantee. We are allergy aware and not allergy free. Nonetheless, we will do what we can to reasonably accommodate camper needs and special diets.

IMPORTANT RE: NUTS AND ANAPHYLAXIS/ALLERGIES:
CAMP NORTHLAND IS A ‘NUT-AWARE’ CAMP AND NOT ‘NUT FREE’

Camp Northland has always attempted to order foods that are “peanut aware”. However, we cannot attempt to eliminate peanuts or tree nuts (“nuts”) entirely from camp i.e. the camp cannot be ‘nut free’. After research and consultation–speaking with campers, families, staff, caterers, other camp directors and our Camp Association–we believe that our camp community benefits from being able to include campers with nut allergies in an anxiety-reduced environment rather than attempting to eliminate peanuts or tree nuts entirely from camp.

In an effort to heighten this awareness:
  • Our dining hall and kitchen is a ‘nut-aware’ space. Please note that the camp is not and cannot be ‘nut free’. Foods served by our dining hall will not contain any nut products in the ingredients, although some items do use phrases like “may contain nuts, peanuts or tree nuts ” or “cooked in a facility that also manufactures nuts, peanuts or tree nuts”, or some variation of the above phrases.
  • We ensure that items most commonly exposed to “cross contamination” in the manufacturing process (i.e. chocolate bars, ice cream, granola bars, etc.) are labeled “nut free” but please note that different manufacturers may treat language around nuts, peanuts and/or tree nuts differently. Campers with allergies should always check ingredients.
  • Peanut butter will not be available at camp.
  • No outside foods are permitted in the dining hall.

If your child has a nut allergy, please educate them to be vigilant in understanding these realities of the camp environment and to always check ingredients before eating a product not known to be safe for them and their particular allergy.
If you as a parent or guardian are sending food with your child on any camp trip, function, bus ride, event, or otherwise it must be kosher and we expect it to be ‘nut free’. Products that are labeled as “safe to share” or ‘Peanut and Tree Nut free’ should be preferred over those that use language like “may contain traces of nuts.” We recognize that finding foods that are completely “nut free”, especially ‘nut free’ and kosher, can be difficult; however your added sensitivity when doing camp shopping is greatly appreciated.

Immunization Policy

 Camper and Staff Immunization Policy

Regarding immunizations, due to COVID-19, we expect that these policies will be fluid and may change as the summer approaches. Please make sure to be signed up for our email updates. All registrants of camp sessions/experiences/events are deemed to accept the reality of these potentially rapidly changing policies. By accepting these terms and conditions, you are agreeing to potential policies which may include mandatory vaccinations.

Current for Summer 2022

Background

Vaccines have saved the lives of more children than any other medical intervention in the past 50 years. The vaccination of all members of the camp community ranks as a key component in maintaining a safe environment and in decreasing the risk of transmission of contagious illness. The determination of mandatory immunization requirements is consistent with Ontario guidelines and based on current clinical guidelines for the best protection of the population against vaccine-preventable diseases.  Mandatory immunization for school-aged children is legislated by the Ontario government (Immunizations of Schools Pupil Act).

These changes are being made to improve the health and safety of campers. The changes will help protect children and staff from vaccine-preventable diseases and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.  These changes also align the immunization requirements for camp with Ontario's publicly funded immunization schedule, which is based on current clinical guidelines for the best protection of the population against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Policy

Camp Northland requires that any member of the camp community in residence (camper or staff) receive up to date, age appropriate immunizations.  The list of required immunizations is based on the most recent requirements mandated by the Province of Ontario for school aged children.

It is the responsibility of each resident at camp [and their families if under 18], to meet the immunization requirement.  Disclosure on the health form or other records of failure to immunize does not exempt from this requirement except in accordance with the exemption policies as outlined below.  If a camper or staff file is reviewed and identified by the Health Care staff that a camper or staff member has not been adequately immunized, the child or staff member will be sent home immediately or required to be picked up by the parent(s) at the camp's sole discretion.  Staff and parents of campers will self-report the status of their immunizations on the Health Information Form submitted annually.

Requests for exemptions and reasonable accommodations related to a medical condition/disability or religious/creed under the Human Rights Code will be considered. However, due to the serious health threat COVID-19 presents to the public, this duty to accommodate will be balanced against the camp's obligations to protect the health and safety of staff and campers. Without exception, and at the sole discretion of Camp Northland and its medical advisors, the camper or staff may be excluded from camp if there is an outbreak or immediate risk of outbreak of a designated disease in the camp where the required immunizations have not been received.  Any cost for excluding the camper or staff will be paid for by the parents and a refund for the days missed will not be provided.

Please note that this may be limited by other third party programs, event rules, intercamp policies or other unforeseen limitations.

The Summer 2022 policy re COVID-19 Vaccine was as follows below.
The Summer 2023 COVID vaccine policy remains TBD (as of September, 2022).  Until such time a change is made, the 2022 policies continue to apply.
  • All campers and camper facing staff will be required to be vaccinated as detailed by provincial guidelines (at this current time this means: two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the start of camp, with the possibility of any boosters, if included in the guidelines)
  • We are strongly recommending that everyone who is eligible receive their booster vaccine prior to camp.
  • When filling in your camp medical forms, proof of vaccines will be required and checked by staff prior to coming to camp.
  • Any requests for exemptions for medical considerations, essential service needs, or essential visitors will be reviewed by our medical team on a case by case basis, with protocols implemented under our medical team's direction and discretion.

Head Lice Policy

Lice – No Nit Policy:
As always, the goal for this summer is to have a safe, happy and healthy camp season where campers and staff can enjoy all camp activities without interruption.

In an effort to keep our camp as lice free as possible, Camp Northland – B’nai Brith will adhere to a “No Nit Policy” which involves staff and campers coming to camp free and clear of head lice.

As a courtesy to fellow campers and staff, we are insisting that everyone who will be attending camp this summer to be checked 5-7 days prior to the start of camp and then again the day before departure.  Any evidence of nits (lice eggs), nymphs (tiny immature lice bugs) and adults (mature lice bugs) must be thoroughly removed. You can do this yourself (using on-line resources or you can book a professional lice inspection at a convenient location for you and with any number of other providers across the GTA.

Our staff will be conducting camp wide head lice screenings at the start of camp.  If your child is found to have any evidence of head lice, then the protocol is that they will be professionally treated on site by a qualified member of our staff team A standard charge of $200.00 per child treated will be billed directly to each family to help offset the cost of this service. This charge will be applied to all incoming campers and staff at the first practical opportunity for the camp to do so, as the infestation would have preceded camp.  Alternatively, parents are welcome to pick up their child/children that same day but due to summer 2021 COVID protocols, they will not be able to return to camp and fees remain non-refundable.

Please note that part of the treatment process involves extensive combing and depending on the severity of the case, this could be anywhere from 3-6 sessions in the Health Centre.  Not only does this disrupt the medical program, but more importantly, it takes time away from your child being able to enjoy camp as it is meant to be.  Campers or staff with lice/nits will also experience periods of isolation from regular activities and/or be required to wear a head covering as determined by camp staff.

If you are planning on booking a professional screening with a professional service, of which many are available, it is recommended that you call in advance as their clinics are by appointment.  Direct numbers can be found on the above linked websites but feel welcome to find a suitable service close to your home.
Let’s all do our part to keep our camp lice free.  Although head lice is not a public health hazard, it is a nuisance and is very easily spread in contained environments/close quarters.  Thank you for your co-operation.
Updated: June 2021

Health Centre

- Camp reserves the right to exercise it's unilateral discretion to send a sick camper home to recover. Typically, this would involve cases where a child has fever for 24 hours or longer or is struggling to recover from an otherwise routine illness. In these situations, once recovered and approved by our Medical Director/procedures, the camper may be allowed to return to camp. There are no refunds for days missed in these circumstances. Accordingly, it is critical that parents are either available for pickup throughout the summer as needed, or will make authorized alternate arrangements.
- Emergency contacts are non-parent/guardians. They should be a 3rd party that will be available in the event that a parent or guardian cannot be reached

Kashrut Policy

Camp Northland serves strictly Kosher (supervised by COR) meals and snacks while on our camp property to all campers, staff, and visitors. However, during the summer, campers may choose to participate in organized trips to other summer camps, parks or sites for competitions, sporting events and/or programs. All campers and staff participating in these optional 'out-of-camp' opportunities will be offered kosher boxed meals and snacks. When campers participate in these activities they are given freedom at these sites during meal and snack times. We cannot take responsibility for the choices that they make with regards to food and snacks consumed outside of the camp itself. If kashrut off site is important to you and your family, you must have this conversation with your camper(s) independently and advise that they elect for, and limit their consumption to, the kosher options that are always made available.

Mail, Faxes, Packages, and Emails

You cannot send packages to your child.
You can send envelopes up to legal size, no larger than 1” thick. We only accept those sent by regular mail. No courier packages are allowed. You cannot send any food, candy or toys to your child. All large envelopes are opened and these items are removed. Only books, magazines and letters are given to the campers.

Emails and faxes sent to camp, despite being intended for delivery to specific campers, remain in plain view of staff and should not be considered private and confidential nor should anything of personal nature be sent by email or fax with any expectation of privacy. Furthermore, emails and faxes may be reviewed by camp staff prior to delivery, and the camp reserves the right to decline delivery of any emails or faxes containing content that does not conform to the camp’s policies, the spirit of our policies and values as well as our camper code of conduct.

This is not an exhaustive list of our camp policies. Please also refer to all camp manuals, information booklets, emails, and newsletter communications.

Last updated: September 2020

Cell Phone Policy

Campers (including CITs) cannot be in possession of a cell phone or any other device with access to data, cell service, wifi, or internet. Any exceptions are only by communicated written policy and remain at the Camp Director’s discretion. Parents or guardians that enable contravention of this policy are compromising the values of our camp and we do not welcome this conduct. By applying to camp you acknowledge and accept this policy. Furthermore, notwithstanding that all phones and data devices are communication tools, personal property, and often are used for safety and tracking purposes, by applying to Camp Northland you accept the following consequences if this policy is violated:

1. Confiscation if the device at camp.
2. Continued confiscation of the device after camp until later in the fall when the camp director’s schedule a meeting with the camper and parents/guardians to discuss the breach of policy, and related enablingnif applicable, and next steps going forward.
3. It remains completely in the camp’s discretion if the device will be returned. Therefore, by applying to camp and violating this policy at camp, you relinquish any rights to the device and the camp has full control of the device, accessories, data cards or chips, and any other related components accordingly.

Cabin Requests

Camp Northland allows campers to make up to three cabin-mate requests. The purpose of these requests is to give the camp a sense of the desired group dynamics. The camp goes through extraordinary analysis of the multiple and often competing requests to place campers in the cabin with the best chance of success and opportunity to thrive at camp. Typically this process results in each camper getting one or
more of their cabin-mate requests, but that is not guaranteed. It is also not guaranteed that large established peer groups will all remain together year over year. The cabin placements analysis happens every spring and we never simply move a cabin group forward year over year (unless the fresh requests and dynamic assessment supports this by coincidence). Our experience has shown that this almost always works out better for the campers in any event, as they make new friends, expand their lens, and become more deeply entrenched in a wider social environment at camp, creating a  healthier social dynamic overall.

Notwithstanding our general policy, first time campers will be guaranteed one of two things:
1. At least one of their cabin-mate requests so long as those requests are all from the same session and program (eg. the 2 week Northland experience)
2. Advance notice if their request of at least one cabin-mate could
not be achieved. This notice will only be provided if the requests were for people from the same session and program. Eg. If a one week camper request people in the longer session, those requests will be disregarded and not addressed in our process.

There are no guarantees of placement and campers will not find out their cabins until arrival to camp.

We do not accept ‘disrequests’ ie: my child should not be placed in a cabin with camper X. If the dynamic is particularly bad with another child, please contact the camp director to discuss the situation and see whether or not camp can assist in facilitating a healthy social dynamic.

Session Extension Requests

While the camp seeks to allow extensions where practical to do so, it is at times not an available option. There is no right to a session extension. Each unique camper’s extension request remains at the camp’s discretion. Various factors will be considered including but not limited to camper behaviour, group dynamics, capacity, staffing, and more. If the camp can facilitate an extension request, all related fees will apply. Campers registered for the Northland Experience programs are less likely to have extension opportunities than other sessions.
