CONNECT-A-COUNSELLOR
We are excited to provide opportunities to connect our campers with our amazing camp staff to catch up, hang out, and have an online chill. This could include cabin reunions, Zoom stargazing, staff Q+A's and way more!
The program is intended to evolve as government regulations change and we will continue to monitor the situation. Any adjustments that are made to the Connect-A-Counsellor initiative will always put the safety of our campers, families, and staff ahead of anything else. We do hope that eventually we will be able to foster in-person connections with counsellors.
For clarity, at this time Camp Northland is not providing names of counsellors for personal or family supervision, but would be happy to provide references for anyone you may have been independently in touch with.

Camp Policies related to Online programming
Supplemental Camp Policies related to Summer 2020 and On-line Programming (Updated June, 2020)
Parents and Children:
To provide a standard of measure on best practices, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, in partnership with the Ontario Camps Association, has developed guidelines to help establish professional boundaries for virtual camp programs. All parents and campers must adhere to these guidelines, as adapted by Camp Northland and provided herein.
Parents and children must also comply with all existing policies and the Camper and Parent Code of Conduct. This document is an additional supplement to the existing policies.
Parent and Camper Mandatory On-Line Conduct Guide:
Parents and campers will ensure that:
• Campers do not send friend requests to staff through social media accounts;
• All parties should be located in common/high traffic household areas (bedrooms/bathrooms are off limits).
* Proper clothing attire must always be worn.
* Only registered children participate in the facilitated on-line programs. If there is more than one child in the household that may participate, all must be registered with the camp. If a child appears that is not registered, the link to your household will be terminated and your account may be suspended pending further review and discussion.
* The camp reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate sessions, link or participation if any aspect of our expectations or policies is violated in fact or spirit.
By participating in this program, I understand that:
1) The Camper and Parent Code of Conduct is still in effect for online programming. All camp policies remain in effect as applicable, as may change from time to time. These policies can be found here: https://www.campnbb.com/camp-policies.html. Additional policy updates specific to online programming may also be found through ‘NBB Connects’ here. Any participation in our camp 2020 programming requires that you agree to stay up to date on these policies and adhere to them without exception.
2) If a participant says/does something either explicitly or in the background that would violate the Code of Conduct in any way, the host will immediately disable that participant's video. If the issue is not resolved, or refuses to be resolved, the participant will be kicked out of the remainder of the session and the parents will be notified.
3) While Camp Northland is taking every measure to keep our online participants safe, they are participating at their own risk. A parent/guardian must be home since we are engaging the child. Although some of our programs are facilitated, it is the parent/guardian that has full supervisory responsibilities for the child or children participating.
4)a) Camp Northland is facilitating an activity, not acting as a supervisor for the child.
4)b) For unfacilitated shared programming ideas, the camp has no involvement, nor supervisory role or responsibility. Each family should also make its own determination as to appropriateness of the recommended programs for your children. Each child is different, and the camp cannot determine the appropriateness of a particular program for your child with recommended self-managed programming.
5) The participant will post and participate online both responsibly and positively.
6) The participant will be mindful of privacy settings and online safety.
7) Camp Northland will not tolerate bullying of any kind which includes cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. Bullying of any kind, including cyberbullying, may result in expulsion from any camp program, including virtual programs, with no refund provided, where applicable.
8) Camp Northland, it's agents, employees, and affiliates including third party program or content providers are in no way responsible for any loss, injury, illness and/or damage of any kind whatsoever arising from, or relating to, the delivery of the ideas and/or resources in any communications related to this program.
By participating in any of our programs, whether facilitated programming, or through ideas shared by email, social media or otherwise, you are agreeing that Camp Northland, its agents, staff, representatives and affiliates are in no way responsible for any loss, injury, illness and/or damage of any kind whatsoever arising from, or related to, the delivery of these program, ideas and/or resources. You may opt out of our email based program at any time by clicking opt out links where provided or emailing [email protected] with your preferences.
Staff:
Our standard Code of Conduct, regulations and policies apply wherever applicable, as posted on our website and updated from time to time. Staff and/or volunteers or ‘volunteer staff’ (former staff that are helping facilitate these programs as volunteers) [collectively referred to as ‘staff’ herein] are also mandated to adhere to and comply without exception to all Staff Policies. This is an additional supplement to the existing policies.
The following policies are in place for the safety of our staff, campers, and their families. Please read through these policies carefully, as they are all important standards in running a fun and safe summer camp.
- Camp Northland Staff Policy Manual
- Camp Northland Staff Handbook: Procedures, Expectations and Resources
All staff must at all times without exception:
• Apply professional standards to all online interactions with campers and parents.
• Maintain professional boundaries by communicating with campers and parents during appropriate times of day and through established and authorized camp platforms (as opposed to staff using their own personal accounts).
• Keep communication goal-oriented and tied to outcomes for a specific camp program.
• Keep all forms of communication transparent by including parents on all correspondence.
• Camp staff must avoid sharing personal videos or requesting a camper share personal videos. If a video is created tied to a camp program/activity, it can only be used if posted to a camp approved platform for campers to access as opposed to sending directly to a camper’s personal account.
• Follow Camp Northland’s privacy policies if posting any digital pictures or other identifying information on social media or websites. For summer 2020, all such posting should be approved by our Directors in advance.
• Set appropriate restrictions to maximize your privacy on your personal social media accounts, ensuring that campers cannot view or post content.
• Refrain from sending or accepting friend requests from campers or liking content in campers’ personal social media accounts.
• Ensure transparency during video chat discussions with campers. While chatting, all parties should be located in common/high traffic household areas (bedrooms/bathrooms are off limits). Proper clothing attire should also be worn.
Questions to ask yourself:
• Would a parent/guardian consider my interaction as reasonable and professional?
• Protocols and procedures if something must be considered and understood in advance of any session. If something happens, (consider issues like abuse/injury/another child not ‘registered’ joins the program [sibling for example]), you must take appropriate action immediately, advise a supervising Director, and complete and submit an incident report to the supervising Director within 24 hours of the incident occurring.
• What are the reporting procedures (Children’s Aid Society, local Police Department) – all of the expectations as outlined in our policies and manuals around ‘Duty to Report’ apply despite the on-line setting.
Examples of inappropriate electronic communication include:
• Intimate or personal texting with campers.
• Sexualized exchanges (communication, pictures, etc.) with campers.
• Using informal and unprofessional language, such as profanity with campers.
• Criticizing campers, parents or colleagues.
• Posting or forwarding content, links or comments that might be considered inappropriate, offensive,
discriminatory or inconsistent with professional or ethical standards.
• Communicating with campers through personal social media accounts or apps.
Staff must participate and successfully complete our summer 2020 on-line training session(s) and complete and submit a ‘volunteer’ form if not under contract for summer 2020 as a camp employee.
