Important re: Over the Counter medications: Please do not send any anticipatory over the counter meds. If you do, please note that it will go into our general pool of medications. Exception: if your child uses an over the counter medication on a daily or regular/ongoing basis, then that should be provided as per above. FAQ's:
Is this a new system for medications?
A: No. We transitioned most campers and staff to this system in 2022, and are now completing this process. The rationale is to keep the campers and staff as safe as possible by having an organized and consistent system of medication storage, packaging and dispensing. This will ensure the safest possible medication dispensing system for everyone. Camp is a complex infrastructure. It is also a large community of over 700 people. Safe and efficient medication management is a top priority.
Are all type of medications required to go through Mednow?
A: All daily medications must go through the Mednow system. In addition, any over-the-counter medications that you anticipate your children will need frequently [daily or most days] (i.e. known pre-existing conditions such as allergies requiring preventive antihistamines) also must be processed through Mednow. It is highly recommended that emergency 'puffers' (e.g. ventolin), and epipens are also filled through Mednow, but you do have the option to fill those elsewhere so long as camp requirements are met.
What about medications that are only taken "as needed"?
A: If you have 'only take as needed' medications and it is not likely that they will be needed daily (or 'most days'), you can send those up separately with clear supporting instructions on the camper/staff medical form to be stored in our health centre.
When does the prescription begin and end?
A: The prescription begins when the camp season begins. If there is a need based on Mednow supply to switch earlier, they will communicate with you directly on a case by case basis.
If your child is signed up for 4 weeks or less, Mednow will fill one month worth of prescription.
If your child is signed up for more than 4 weeks, Mednow will will fill a full summer prescription.
If you end up extending your child's stay at camp, we will communicate any required steps at that time.
Any medications left over after the camper session (any length) are sent back to you with the camper.
After the summer, or even immediately after this summer specific script is filled, there is nothing preventing you from immediately reverting to your normal pharmacy. Mednow will ask you on their initial phone call if you would like them to transfer back the prescriptions to your pharmacy once they have completed their process on their end. This will ensure that there are no added steps you need to do once your child returns home.
Is Camp Northland benefitting in any way from this process?
A: This system does not benefit the camp in any way (financially or otherwise) except as it relates to the best interest of your child's and our staff's safety.
